How Raise the Roofs London started

Covid took the old firm. We started again.

Covid cost Steve the roofing company he had run since taking it over from his father, a firm that employed 20 operatives at its peak.

He started again. Raise the Roofs London Limited was registered in March 2024, with Steve Ball and John Ireland as its directors.

Today it's just the two of us, and we both look at jobs and quote. Between us we've written more than 500 quotes since March 2024.

  1. 1988 May Steve passes his City and Guilds in mastic asphalt, with distinctions.
  2. 1996 March Steve takes over his father's roofing firm and joins the Confederation of Roofing Contractors.
  3. 2024 March Raise the Roofs London is registered, with Steve Ball and John Ireland as directors.
  4. 2024 September A warm flat roof for St Mark's Church on Westmoreland Road, Bromley.
  5. 2025 February A hospital roof opened for a 6.5 tonne MRI scanner to be craned out at Hammersmith Hospital.
  6. 2025 March In the News Shopper, for offering to fill a Coney Hall pothole for free.

Steve Ball

Steve Ball, roofing since 1988

Director, on the roofs. 37 years in roofing.

Steve served a four-year apprenticeship and earned his City and Guilds Craft Certificate in Mastic Asphalt Work at Vauxhall College of Building and Further Education in May 1988, with distinctions for both the written paper and the assignments. In 1996 he took over the family roofing firm from his father, Chris Ball, and joined the Confederation of Roofing Contractors the same year.

He has strong views, and he doesn't hide them. He thinks roofing should be regulated rather than left as a free-for-all, because "when I started the level of skill was much higher, now everyone seems to think they are a 'roofer' by simply buying a van and a ladder." He won't fit fibreglass (GRP) flat roofs after seeing too many fail. And on the question every homeowner asks, whether a roof needs replacing or only repairing, his answer is short: "honesty is everything, we never upsell."

Steve also flies the drone for our roof surveys, which is how he took the photographs of Coney Hall from 120 metres up. He posts finished jobs on Facebook, and you'll find Raise the Roofs London on Instagram, X and YouTube too.

John Ireland

John Ireland, co-founder and director

Director, running the business. Your first call for a quote.

John is one of the two directors who founded Raise the Roofs London in March 2024, and he runs the business side of the company. John leads everything that makes a job go well: the first call, the visit to see the problem, the quote, the planning and the follow-up afterwards. Between them, the two directors have written more than 500 quotes since the company began.

John has spent many years managing people, projects and budgets, and it shows in how every Raise the Roofs job runs. He keeps the work on schedule, keeps you informed at each stage, and keeps the price where it was agreed. His aim is simple: fix the problem properly, efficiently and within your budget, with no pressure and no upselling.

What customers remember most is how helpful he is. John listens, explains things in plain English, and makes sure you know exactly what's wrong and what it will cost to put right. One customer wrote that he "explained the job in hand step by step"; another that he "identified the various problems we had", including some left behind by an earlier firm's work. If you've got a roof worry, John is the person to call.

Our roofing insurance, including fire

The line that matters most is the last one. Torch-on felt is laid with a flame, and a lot of roofers leave fire out of their cover to keep the premium down. Steve's example: about £1,200 a year without heat work, against more than £4,000 a year for a policy like ours.

"Customers engage roofers without even knowing they do not have adequate cover if there was to be a fire!" Steve Ball

Raise the Roofs in the News Shopper

In March 2025 a large pothole on Jackass Lane in Coney Hall had been left for three weeks. We offered, in a local Facebook group, to fix it for free, and it drew around 40 comments of support. We held back only for fear of being sued by the council, though Steve reckoned it was a 15-minute job.

Bromley Council filled it the day after we said we'd do it ourselves, and the News Shopper covered the story.

How to check any roofer, including us

Six things worth checking before anyone goes up your roof.

How to check any roofer, including us

Six checks, all ticked for us

  1. A trade body you can look up. We've been CoRC members since 1996, no. 1501. Check the CoRC
  2. Insurance that covers fire. Ask to see it, and ask about hot works by name. Ours includes fire, with £5m public liability.
  3. A real company. Raise the Roofs London Limited is company 15585290. See it on Companies House
  4. Reviews somewhere independent. We're on Trustatrader, member TT671.
  5. No money up front. We don't take a deposit, on any job.
  6. Scaffolding, not a ladder. Unless it's a few minutes' work, like a gutter bracket, the roof needs scaffold, and a flat roof needs handrails round its edge. HSE guidance says so, and so do we.
