West Wickham roofs: one 1930s building boom

West Wickham went from village to suburb almost in one go. Local historians at the University of Greenwich describe fields "covered with houses that varied little in design or appearance" in the late 1920s and early 1930s, and say that with "just a single phase of development in its history, the town retains a surprisingly unified appearance" (Ideal Homes).

Coney Hall was part of that boom. The farm land was bought by Morrells, the builders, and houses on Birch Tree Avenue date from 1934 (Ideal Homes). Hayes followed the same pattern through the 1930s, with large firms such as Henry Boot building alongside local builders (Ideal Homes).

That matches what Steve sees on the roofs: Coney Hall and West Wickham have a lot of mock Tudor semis, and plenty of homes here have a flat-roofed garage or rear extension.

Flat roof repairs and quotes in West Wickham

Plenty of West Wickham homes have a flat-roofed garage or rear extension, and they're some of the roofs we see most. In August 2026 one had two problems that looked like one, a room overheating under its flat roof and a damp kitchen wall, and both were fixed in three days (the full story).

Bigger ones too. The roof in the photo is Beckenhamians Rugby Club in West Wickham: 220 square metres of torch-on felt over 120 mm of rigid insulation, laid by Steve in August 2021, before Raise the Roofs London began (Steve's earlier work). We don't fit fibreglass (GRP).

What a customer said

"Had a leak through my flat roof. I opted for this company because it is registered with the confederation of roofing contractors, is based in West Wickham, has a good website and has great reviews. The response was rapid, commencing work the next working day."

Mock Tudor gables and chimney lead in West Wickham

Coney Hall and West Wickham have a lot of mock Tudor semis, and their gables and chimneys need as much care as the tiles. The gable in the photo is Steve's earlier work in West Wickham: replacement black hardwood beams and new white textured render.

On the chimneys, it's the lead. Code 4 lead step flashings, dressed up the side of the stack, send the water off the brickwork instead of into the roof. Steve has done those in West Wickham too (his earlier work).
